The Catkin Story

The Catkin story revolves around the Hazel Tree. The Celts believed the trees that grew around them all held special powers. The Hazel Tree is arguably the quintessential Celtic Tree due to it’s legendary position at the heart or entrance of the Otherworld. This wine is named after the flower of the Hazel. Catkins are the cascading bunches of Hazel flowers seen in late winter signifying the origin of harvest with exploding colour and life.

Tasting Notes

Aroma
Deep and vibrant in the glass, the nose show intense lift with characters of summer berries, fresh woody herbs with integrated spicy French oak.

Palate
Medium to full bodied the wine dances seamlessly across the palate. Plum and Juicy blackberry flavours are delightfully balanced by a fine structure and natural acidity. Spicy oak adds complexity and a framework of tannin leading to a long dry finish.

Vineyards

Selected from five micro-climatic regions of McLaren Vale. The first from Seaview producing rich structural wines. The second from Whites Valley producing wines with textural tannins and great flavour depth. The third from McLaren Flat is off the vineyard surrounding the winery producing elegant lifted wines with fine tannins, The fourth from Blewitt Springs produces wines with elegant red fruits and hints of menthol, the Last vineyard from Willunga produces full bodied wines with very dark fruits.

Winemaking

De-stemmed but not crushed into open fermenters with 3 day cold soak. Plunged 3 x day for 8 days on skins then pressed of to finish ferment in barrel (new & used FO).
Batches kept separate until blending after 15 months maturation.
